Public Health Placement

As a Public Health Intern you will be partnered with the public health department at a Ghana Health Service (GHS) facility (Central Regional Hospital in Cape Coast or Elmina District Hospital in Elmina). You will be observing the care of patients, and assisting the public health nurses on their outreach and public health visits to villages in the Cape Coast area. You will have the opportunity to conduct your own research, and to do evaluations of current health care systems and NGOs.

You will also be given opportunities to create and organise public health campaigns, with the assistance of Abusua Foundation, and to implement these in Cape Coast.

Interns are also partnered up with a second facility, such as an orphanage, or a keep-fit club where they can conduct research/ or give health talks.

Through this placement interns will gain a broader insight into the realities of public health in Africa, and in Ghana specifically.

Objectives of the placement

•    Assist public health nurses in their daily duties.
•    Advocate public health awareness through public education and outreach.
•    Foster skill transfer between the interns and the GHS.
•    Foster greater understanding among interns about healthcare issues faced in Ghana and in West Africa.
•    Help to create partnerships between MOH and local civic groups, NGOs and diplomatic missions.

The Intern

We are looking for people with a health or public health background. Students currently enrolled in public health degrees are welcome to apply. We require a 1-month commitment, but internships can last much longer. Applicants should be open minded and have a sense of adventure. The healthcare system in Ghana can be daunting, and interns are expected to adapt to this challenging environment.

Fees:
All interns are provided with airport pick-up, orientation in Cape Coast, 24/7 emergency support, daily food (breakfast and dinner) and accommodation at the Abusua Foundation volunteer house for $120 a week. For placements less than 6 weeks there is a flat fee of $720.

Confirmation Fee:
There is a $500 non-refundable confirmation fee to secure the placement, which is due 30 days after acceptance by the programme. The rest of the programme fee is due 30 days before your arrival in Ghana.
