Human Rights Placements

 The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice Public Education Intern Programme  

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) is considered one of Africa’s most successful human rights organisations, and is funded by the Ghanaian government and the United Nations. It exists to enhance the scale of good governance, democracy, integrity, peace and social development by promoting, protecting and enforcing fundamental human rights and freedoms and administrative justice for all persons in Ghana.

Objectives of the placement
•    Assist CHRAJ in its outreach and public education programmes.
•    Advocate human rights at a local and national level in Ghana.
•    Foster skill transfer between the interns and CHRAJ.
•    Foster greater understanding among interns about human rights issues faced in Ghana and in West Africa.
•    Help to create partnerships between CHRAJ and local civic groups, NGOs and diplomatic missions.  

The Placement
As a Public Education Intern you will be part of a team professionals at the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) working to foster and promote human rights in Ghana. You will assist the PE staff with outreach and education programmes in the Cape Coast or Takoradi area, including helping to create and give human rights talks, appearing on local radio and television stations and attending conferences on behalf of the Commission. You will also sit in on mediation sessions and may be required to accompany CHRAJ staff on monitoring and evaluation exercises throughout the region.  

The Intern
We are looking for people with a proven interest in human rights, and who want the challenge of working in a bureaucratic Commission in Ghana. We require a three month commitment, but internships can last up to one year. We are looking for candidates with at least a Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, law or education. Those with law degrees are encouraged to apply.  

Skills  

•    Communication skills (written and oral), with a focus on public speaking
•    Organizational skills – project planning, execution and evaluation
•    Computer and typing skills (good working knowledge of MS Office)
•    Internet research experience
•    Self-motivated,
•    Able to adapt to difficult and challenging working environments
•    Fluent in English  

Accommodation
All interns for Cape Coast Placements are housed in the Abusua Foundation house, located on the University of Cape Coast campus. Breakfast and dinner are provided at the house, 7 days a week. Rooms hold 1-2 people and the house shares 4 bathrooms. There is a communal kitchen, living area and terrace. Takoradi placements are housed in a homestay with 1 other volunteer. Food and accommodation is also covered in the programme fees, as with the Cape Coast placements.  

Hours
Working hours are 8:30am – 4:30 pm Monday through Friday, unless otherwise specified.  

Fees
All interns are provided with airport pick-up, orientation in Cape Coast, 24/7 Emergency support, daily food (breakfast and dinner) and accommodation for $120 a week. For placements less than 6 weeks there is a flat fee of $720.  

Confirmation Fee
There is a $500 non-refundable confirmation fee to secure the placement, which is due 30 days after acceptance by the programme. The rest of the programme fee is due 30 days before your arrival in Ghana.

Visas; Airfare; Health insurance; Travel insurance; Vaccinations; Local transportation
