Vision Screening & Intervention Project

The Vision Screening and Intervention Project for public school children in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankesse District of the Central Region comprises an eye screening and intervention project, a study habit diagnosis and counselling project as well as a home situational diagnosis and guidance project for selected public JHS’s in the Cape Coast Metropolis. As part of these projects various surveys and experimental studies are implemented to best help understand the situation on the ground.

As a volunteer you will help with the preparation and organization of the screening, the administration of the screening in the public schools in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankesse regions, help with the refraction and place the lens orders. There is the possibility of being trained on arrival in administering the vision screening.

Abusua is looking for people with a background in nursing, education, educational development and/or counselling who are willing to work in the public schools in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankesse district.

Some combination of the following skills are preferred to volunteering in these types of placements:

  • Communication skills (written and oral), with experience in public speaking
  • organizational skills – project planning, execution and evaluation
  • Computer and typing skills
  • Self-motivated, friendly and possess the ability to adapt to difficult and challenging working environments
  • Fluent in English

Fees: All volunteers are provided with airport pick-up, orientation in Cape Coast, 24/7 Emergency support, daily food (breakfast and dinner) and accommodation for $120 a week. For placements less than 6 weeks there is a flat fee of $720.

Confirmation Fee: There is a $500 non-refundable confirmation fee to secure the placement, which is due 30 days after acceptance of the programme. The rest of the programme fee is due 30 days before your arrival in Ghana.
